PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — The distinctive silhouette and powerful roar of a Cold War-era jet will greet spectators when Bill Culberson of FighterJets, Inc. flies the MiG-17 at the Florida International Air Show, Nov. 7–8, 2026, at Punta Gorda Airport.
Culberson’s appearance gives Southwest Florida families, veterans and aviation enthusiasts an opportunity to see a historic fighter in flight. Developed in the Soviet Union, the swept-wing MiG-17 became known for its maneuverability and its role in the Vietnam War. Its performance over Punta Gorda will bring an important chapter of aviation history to life.
For Culberson, preserving military aviation is a lifelong passion. The son of an Air Force fighter pilot, he served in the Air Force before earning an electrical engineering degree from the University of Alabama. He spent 24 years in commercial aviation, including 17 as an FAA-designated engineering representative working with aircraft design approvals and testing.
He retired from commercial aviation in 2016 to concentrate on restoring and flying classic military aircraft. His qualifications include type ratings in the L-29, MiG-15, MiG-17, T-33 and B-17 — experience that reflects his dedication to keeping aviation heritage flying.
The MiG-17 joins a lineup that includes Rick Sharpe flying the TA-4J Skyhawk, international aerobatic performer Aarron Deliu, Red Bull athlete Kevin Coleman, Franklin’s Flying Circus and The Chuters Jump Team. Guests can also explore static aircraft displays, visit exhibitors and food vendors, and enjoy family activities and the STEM Innovator’s Pavilion.
The Florida International Air Show is a nonprofit community event that celebrates aviation while supporting local charitable organizations. Ticket purchases and sponsorships help make the weekend possible and sustain its community mission.
Gates open at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7–8. Make plans to experience the sights, sounds and history of jet aviation from the air show grounds.
